And, granted, you're more likely to be involved in an accident with a truck whose driver falls asleep or brakes fail than for some other outlier. Take the trailer actually splitting in half, for example. Although no one was injured, a truck spilled around 52,000 pounds – 26 tons – of cranberries on I-39 in Marathon County, Wisconsin. The driver says he thought he had a flat tire, but saw the trailer split when he pulled over. The right lane of the highway was closed for a mile so crews could clean up the cranberries. While officials say they don't have an exact cause for why the trailer split, it is believed metal fatigue is to blame. The Kronenwetter chief of police says it is fortunate no one was injured. Indeed. Metal fatigue is not uncommon and is the result of some alloys, especially titanium and aluminum, becoming stressed after extended use. Things like this are supposed to be caught by trucking maintenance departments, but this one apparently slipped by them.
