Add Daydreaming to Causes of Distracted Driving Accidents
Beware, daydreamers, especially if you’re driving. According to the Erie Insurance Group, daydreamers are five times more likely to cause auto accidents than are people who are distracted by texting or talking on their phone.
According to
Erie’s findings, 62 percent of distracted driving accidents that resulted in a
fatality were caused by a diver who was “lost in thought.” Twelve percent of
distracted driving accidents resulting in death were caused by someone using
their phone to text or talk.
Erie’s data was the result of looking through 65,000 car accidents that resulted in a fatality in 2011 and 2012. Roughly ten percent of these accidents were caused by distracted drivers.
While it’s one thing to demand laws that punish people who are texting and driving, daydreaming is not so easy to litigate. It’s easy to say concentrate on driving, which is obvious, anyway. Keep your eyes on the road and your hands upon the wheel, sang Jim Morrison in “Roadhouse Blues,” but listening to that song while you’re driving, and focusing on the lyrics or the melody when you should be focusing on the road can cause an accident. And, while the Doors might be a really good band, they’re not worth causing an accident for.
