Baby Boomers at Higher Risk of Motorcycle Accidents than any Other Age Group

The journal Injury Prevention published a study last week stating older motorcyclists, those in the Baby Boomer generation, are three times more likely to suffer severe injuries in motorcycle accidents than younger riders.

Looking at statistics between 2001 and 2008, there were 1.45 million motorcycle accidents involving people over the age of 20. 85 percent of those were men.

Accident Percentage and Age Brackets

·         63 percent occurred in the 20-39 age bracket
·         32 percent among people aged 40-59
·         5 percent among those aged 60 and older

While this shows that more incidents occurred in the youngest age bracket, the 60 and older bracket actually jumped a whopping 247 percent. Accidents in the 40 to 59 age bracket rose 61 percent.

In addition to being at higher risk, older bikers also reportedly suffered worse injuries. A third of the accident victims in the 60 and older group required hospital emergency care versus 25 percent in the 40 to 59, and 15 percent in the 20 to 39 age bracket.

Possibly the main reason this occurs is due to physiological changes in people who are older. Bones become more brittle, body fat distribution changes, and they are slower to recover from injuries – and illnesses that can compound injury recovery. Another possibility is that Baby Boomers have much more disposable income, and the rise in the weekend warrior with a Harley means this age group is more likely to be on the road on two wheels than the other age groups on average.
