A stretch
limousine on its way to a bachelorette party caught fire while crossing the Bay
Bridge in San Francisco, and killed five of the nine people inside. Among the
dead were the bride-to-be. One of the survivors of the auto accident reportedly had to crawl
through the partition to get out while the others escaped through a back door.
According to
the driver, who survived uninjured, a passenger knocked on the window and said,
“Smoke.” The driver allegedly thought the passenger was asking if she could
smoke a cigarette. She knocked again less than a minute later, and the driver
could smell smoke. He pulled over, and was able to help two of the survivors
out, but the care was engulfed in flames.
Of the four
women who survived, all suffered smoke inhalation and burn injuries. One
remains in critical condition and another is in serious condition. The bodies
of the dead were piled near the partition separating the back from the driver’s
side.
Fire
investigators do not know what caused the fire; only that it started in or near
the trunk of the limousine. The limo company has stated it will do everything
it can to assist in the investigation.
