The Accident Lawyers Network BlogAccident Lawyers NetworkMonday, April 30, 20127 Killed in SUV Accident in the Bronx
Three
generations of one family were killed when the 2004 Honda Pilot they were in
apparently lost control on an elevated highway, and crashed 60 feet below in a
nonpublic area of the Bronx Zoo on Sunday.
Skid marks crossing
three southbound lanes on the highway do not give investigators much to go on.
The guardrail shows no evidence of being touched, except by some oil that
probably came from the SUV. It is believed the driver, a 45-year-old woman,
lost control of the SUV, estimated at travelling around 70 mph, which then hit
the Jersey barrier in the center median, veered to the right where the vehicle
hit a curb an flew over the guardrail.
The seven
occupants were killed when the SUV landed on its top
in a corner of the zoo. Two grandparents who had recently arrived from the
Dominican Republic, their two daughters, and three children of the two
daughters were identified as the victims.
Witnesses say
it looked like the Pilot may have blown a tire, but investigators aren’t sure
since there are no skid marks before the SUV hit the barrier.
An accident
last June that occurred on the northbound lanes of the Bronx River Parkway was
similar in that it also hit a median, flew through the air, and landed 30 feet
below. As a result of the two accidents, agencies are discussing whether the
guardrails are too low, as well as what other safety measures should be taken.
