The Accident Lawyers Network BlogAccident Lawyers NetworkThursday, June 24, 2010Train Accident Kills 12 in SpainTwelve people were killed and at least 14 seriously injured when a train hit them as they were crossing the train tracks. The group was part of a throng of people heading to the beach to celebrate an annual summer festival in Castelldefels Playa. Authorities and witnesses say the group had just arrived from Barcelona on a commuter train. There is a tunnel to take pedestrians safely from one side of the tracks to the other, but at least 30 people either ignored the tunnel or didn't know it was there. One person near the tragedy said the door was closed, so they tried to get through the side of the train. There was no light and no one warned them that the train was coming. The train that hit the group is a high speed train that does not stop at the crossing. It was on its way into Barcelona and was travelling around 87 miles an hour when the people were hit by the train. The underpass has been used for years, but people regularly cross the tracks since there is usually a line of people waiting to cross under. This seems to be a simple tragic mistake that this group of people made, but there is still some confusion. The station was remodeled last year and it may have played a part in confusing people who were not familiar with the area. There were signs telling the group where the underpass is, but some claim they did not see any signs.
