Last August, two Texas college students were on their way back to Sul Ross State University. However, according to investigators, the right front tire on the Ford F-150 they were in shredded. This caused the truck to skid sideways and then overturn. Both students, a 21-year-old male and an 18-year-old female, were killed in the fatal auto accident.

As a result of this accident, Goodyear has recalled 41,000 tires used on pickups, SUVs, and vans as of this month. Letters will be sent out to vehicle owners in late March. What makes this accident more tragic than it already is, is that Goodyear knew about the tire problem as early as May 2009. The attorney for the family of the male driver says, "You have to wonder, if something had been done sooner, could these young people be alive today."

A letter dated February 22 and sent to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration from Goodyear says that a small number of the recalled tires "may experience a partial tread area separation under severe usage conditions." The company also alleges they inspected the tire from the wreck in December and says the West Texas rollover accident was the result of external factors.

Six sizes of tires have been recalled. These have a serial code found in the sidewall, and include:

The family of the male victim has questioned whether this limited recall is enough to catch all defective tires that may cause rollover accidents that seriously injure or kill passengers.
