Wrong Way Vehicle Kills One in Auto Accident on I 25

An allegedly drunk driver took the wrong ramp and began driving south in the north lanes of I-25 near Thornton, Colorado on July 5. She hit at least one vehicle on the Thornton Parkway and continued south until she hit a station wagon that attempted to get out of the way. A 22-year-old woman was killed in the passenger seat and her male driver injured.

A witness to the wrong-way driving called 911 as soon as he saw her. The witness said the wrong-way driver was traveling 50 to 55 mph in the lane closest to the median. She appeared to make no attempt to stop or exit the highway, even though vehicles were braking, flashing their lights, and getting out of her way.

The drunk driver who caused the accident was taken to the hospital and then booked. According to Colorado State Patrol, she was charged with vehicular homicide, two counts of vehicular assault, hit and run, DUI, driving the wrong way on a divided highway, careless driving, and failure to remain at the scene of an accident.

The victim who lost her life graduated in May from Colorado State University with a double major. The drunk driver has various traffic violations dating back ten years, but several of these were apparently dismissed.
